| How to deal with decimals |
When rounding off numbers, we can take the number of places after the decimal, or look at the whole number.
e.g. if we work out the square root of 5 on a calculator, we get the answer 2.2360679774….
To work with a number having this number of decimal places is very long-winded, so we can round the number up or down according to the level of accuracy we need.
To round off 2.2360679774 to 3 decimal places, we look at the 4th digit after the decimal point:
2.2360679774 this is less than 5, so the answer is 2.236
If we round off 2.2360679774 to 2 decimal places, the answer is 2.24, as the 3rd number after the decimal point is greater than 5.
Note: Round 0.00321 to 2 decimal places:
The 3rd number after the decimal point is less than 5, so the answer is 0.00. We need the two places of decimals in the answer. |
