| How to understand day and night and the moon |
Day and night
- All these effects are caused by the Earth spinning on its axis:
- The sun appears to move across the sky in the day.
- The sun rises in the east, is highest in the sky at midday and sets in the west.
- Shadows are longer in the morning and evening, and shortest at midday.
The moon
- The moon is much smaller than the Earth.
- We only see one face of the moon.
- We see phases of the moon because light from the sun reflects off the moon.
- A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the sun's light.
